Jesus Guillen is the wine maker at White Rose Estate in the Willamette Valley. He works at White Rose Estate alongside his father and brother. Before moving to the United States, Jesus was a computer systems engineer in Mexico. Several years back, he was taking english classes while visiting his family in Oregon. He tells a story about that trip and how he tasted two wines that inspired him towards a career change. The story was recorded in the cellar at White Rose Estate in Dayton, OR.
This is the third episode from our series, Inheritance Stories: Latino Voices on Farming, Culture, and Ecology. In October and November, we created an Inheritance Stories exhibit that featured immersive listening station containing portraits and stories in Spanish and English from food and farm workers, organizers, chefs, educators, entrepreneurs, and gardeners. An excerpt of Jesus’ story was recently featured on Think Out Loud.
“It was a really scary decision because my English wasn’t that good and my wine making skills were basically zero.”
– Jesus Guillen
